Marilène Phipps-Kettlewell paints beautifully detailed works that combine heightened atmospherics with impeccable draftsmanship. Phipps-Kettlewell creates close-up compositions that use color and shape to create patterns within the larger image. In her hands, a cat lying on a rug becomes a study in interlocking paisley, and a carousel becomes a forest of blue and yellow stripes.

Phipps-Kettlewell works in oil on linen, a medium that allows for small movements and layered colors. She begins each work with a full palette: darkest blues through pastel yellows and all the way to technicolor reds. From these unlikely hues, she creates amazingly realistic depictions of people, animals, house interiors, leafy parks, and anything else "ordinary" that she is able to transform into a scene of beauty. Her intricate textures and fine lines give the paintings even more depth.

Phipps-Kettlewell was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and today lives outside of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. She has exhibited all across the United States as well as in Spain, France, Ireland, South Africa, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Bosnia, and Haiti.
