FRANCIS JOIRIS

The Influence of Color
November 3 - November 24, 2015
Reception: Thursday November 5, 2015 6-8 PM

The spirited, probing work of Francis JOIRIS combines varying cardboards and recycled objects with painting techniques to make something entirely new. Joiris calls himself a cartonniste, or “cardboard artist.” Though the term was coined in the seventies, Joiris’s pieces are wholly a product of the modern day. Each work contains a multitude of contradictions: they are maximal and intricate in their materials, yet pared down in their composition. They are well-worked, yet applied with a free, light hand. They are non-representational, yet their graphic nature and symmetry hint at meaningful patterns and spatial relationships underneath. The pieces beg interpretation through all their mixed messages.

Joiris’s work is partly reminiscent of Robert Rauschenberg's, though it is freer in its color palette and more restrained in its materials. The artist makes great use of thick, impasto color mixed with scraps of ephemera that flash fragmented information at the viewer. Joiris helps fill in the blanks with his vivid pattern-making and thickly scored textures.

Joiris was born and currently lives in Belgium. His work has been exhibited in Europe, mainly in Belgium, France, Spain, and England.
