MONIKA GLOVICZKI

I Remember You, I Know this Place
November 10 – December 1, 2018
Reception: Thursday, November 15, 2018 6-8 PM

Regarding the paintings of Monika Gloviczki, what leaps to the eye is her use of colors. Pale blues, pinks and yellows, often stippled with white, lend her work a sort of mirroring quality. This reflective aspect—as though her works were doubles of a noumenal world—gets at the minimalist essence of the objects Gloviczki paints. City streets and the architecture of buildings dissolve into pure abstraction, where every mark of paint alludes to what was formerly perceived directly. In the artist’s own words, “Painting is the essence of my life, an unexplained necessity to express something that I feel or imagine. It is like a journey to the deeper layers of the self, under the everyday banalities. It is a silent music played by colors.”

The link Gloviczki makes between music and painting is not accidental. One artist she shares affinities with is Wassily Kandinsky, who famously made paintings out of synesthesia. Gloviczki, however, has her own unique palette, which allows her to express the inner nature of what she represents without having to borrow too heavily from another medium.
