Autumn Equinox: Collective Visions in Abstraction and Figuration
September 21 – October 11, 2018
Reception: Thursday, September 27, 2018 6-8 PM

Drawing from her Mexican cultural heritage, artist Nora Pineda creates ceramic and stoneware works that undulate like a curvaceous female body. Utilizing various techniques and firing methods, Pineda’s vessels evoke freedom, celebration, suffering, and cultural bonding through a fusion of shape, color, and pattern. Breasts, hips, and soft faces emerge from her objects that serve as homages to the power of the eternal feminine. As containers for water and food, Pineda’s works are symbolic connections between the earth and the female body.

In works titled Chica in Swirls and Earthquake, Pineda renders pouty, feminine lips and bright pink fingernails on the surfaces of her curvilinear vases. Thick, black lines surround her playful illustrations depicting freedom and femininity. Duenas de la Olla, however, is a smooth, sinuous vessel in earthtones inspired by Southwestern American art and culture. Finally, Healer’s Touch is a brightly patterned container featuring an abstracted human face. Vibrant and rich, the work blends aspects of old and new to create an entirely singular motif speaking to the vast and varied connections between women, nature, and culture.
