MARIANNE FERNANDEZ

Fragmented Reality
February 12 – March 3, 2016
Reception: Thursday, February 18, 2016 6-8 PM

For Marianne Fernandez, art is not about following a single concept or style. Instead, her works are about the process of finding out what her materials can express. “I like to play around with materials or subjects and see what happens,” she says. That sense of openness and experimentation finds expression in her images. Working in oils and acrylics, Fernandez paints in many styles, from portraits to landscapes to boldly geometric abstract patterns. Her use of color runs an equally broad spectrum, including juxtapositions of soft, muted shades and vibrant bursts of almost neon hues.

What truly unite her works are a balanced style of composition and a keen awareness of how to arrange colors in a way that suggests space, depth, and movement. While her images are all strongly centered, there is a lightness to them that keeps them from feeling weighed down. In addition, her ability to create effects of light and shadow gives each painting a fully rounded physicality, making each scene or pattern vividly present, and making a powerful connection with the viewer.
