Cast in dramatic strokes and lively colors, the paintings of Gwaylon Leaf present spectacular arcs, flourishes, and crescendos. Leaf’s style is decidedly elegant, creating compositions which often use a focal point around which expressive movement orbits, extending outward into space. Using gouache as his primary medium, Leaf uses a technique akin to eastern calligraphy—his dry brush strokes have an organic feel, feathered and withering as the paint is pulled across the canvas. In a unique blend of Eastern and Western aesthetics, Leaf’s paintings navigate cultural dialectics experienced by the artist as the son of a bi-racial family.

Leaf lives in Nevada where he works as an educator.
