From a young age Sayumi Osanai has had an interest and skill in the arts. As a child, she drew pictures and later studied at Hokkaido University of Education and received her Bachelor of Arts in Pedagogy in Art Education. Painting has been an essential part of Osanai’s life; her work showcases a deep appreciation for the unique use of light and shadow in painting that was popularized by artists like Vermeer.

During her time at University, Osanai was struck by works of Rembrandt and Vermeer and was inspired to make their techniques her own. She applied the contrasting strokes of light and shadow to ponds of waterlilies and created paintings that would later become her signature works. In recent years, she has been most inspired by spiritual subjects and the spiritual world. This is shown in her current works of Venetian masks; enchanted by being able to look through the eyes of those masks and how they are transformed into humans facial expressions. Osanai creates her work to capture the moment of human emotions and to explore the profoundness of the soul through the eyes in the masks. Though Osanai creates without the restrictions of the art community, her work has won several prominent awards and has gained the much-deserved respect from artists around the world.
