Abstract artist Russell Jacobs allows the viewer to decide what his work represents. The key to finding cultural, social or political messages on his canvas can be found not with the artist but with those who are looking upon his art. According to Jacobs, “I really don’t give clues or want to be pretentious about what my images mean, my objective is to keep the viewer as busy and interested in the work as possible.” Painting in the abstract affords him the opportunity to explore different media and painting methodologies. Jacobs counts among his influences: Van Gogh for color, Miró and Kandinsky for shape and form, and Pollock for technique.

Born in Hollywood, CA, Jacobs holds an MFA from California State University Long Beach and an M.A.T. in Education, and he teaches fine art to students in Las Vegas. Working with acrylic, painting, and mixed media, Jacobs describes his painting technique as being as direct and immediate as possible. “I work the painting to a point of satisfaction, rest and observe, then work on it again till I’m finished,” notes Jacobs.
