The surreal oil on canvas paintings of Canadian artist Paulette Cecile are as fascinating as they are compelling. Exploring the deep and intrinsic interconnectedness of all that is visible and not-so-visible, Cecile masterfully combines color, a strong sense of line, and a complex use of form to suggest that there is so much more to life than what meets the eye. What results are dreamlike images that juxtapose the figurative and fantastical to speak of a world that is rich in meaning and ever-evolving.
Cecile’s work has been inspired by a lifetime of observation, both of human nature and of the always-changing sky and natural landscapes. Tension is created throughout each piece through concurrent imagery of dormancy and lack of awareness (almost a cocoon-like state) alongside symbolism that speaks of an impatient urge to awaken and enter into metamorphosis. Cecile explains her work as such: “My landscapes represent change, potential change, and evolving life. The fabric and layering reveal and encourage investigation of what is hidden.” Indeed, Cecile’s is a message of hope and a call to action for us to embrace that change that is our birthright.
