BO SONG

Spectrum Miami
December 5 – December 9, 2018
Reception: Wednesday, December 5, 2018 6-8 PM

Korean artist Bo Song expresses the vitality of life through her color palate, infusing every work with bright, unmodulated pools of color separated by thick, black lines, reminiscent of Fauvism and the works of Matisse. Working primarily in oil on canvas, Song lets her subject matter lead her through the image-making process, relying on intuition and spontaneity rather than meticulously-planned sketches. In Water Lilies Rooted in The Sea, the artist uses loose, furious brushstrokes in the sky, while choosing a more refined, controlled approach for the water lilies. In Space of Meditation, a curving navy-blue shadow cuts through the orange shoreline like a runny ink blot, leading to what looks like a human figure watching the tide recede.

As a practicing Buddhist, Song incorporates themes of karma in her work, finding peace and comfort in the natural world. Every stroke comes from a place of love as she carefully renders the details of the Korean countryside. The artist reminds us of the power of immersing oneself in nature. Bo Song currently lives and works in Unjung-dong, Korea.
