Solitude, Introspection, & Surrealism
March 4 – March 25, 2020
Reception: Thursday, March 5, 2020 6-8 PM

Jennifer Valenzuela's creative process begins by internalizing Hawaii's natural aesthetic, absorbing its sense of energy. Working with oil on wood panel, and often embellishing her compositions with gold leaf, Valenzuela allows elements of her underpainting, preliminary charcoal markings, to unfold until her composition is realized. Her work harkens back to a mid century aesthetic and frame of mind. Valenzuela plays with images such as longboards, wave patterns, mountains, tropical foliage, spatial relationships, and the physics of space and time, transporting her viewer's both physically and philosophically.

Valenzuela has created a style referred to as imagined landscapes; inspired by her admiration of the Hawaiian people and the adornment of the island’s magical environment. Her paintings honor Hawaiian culture; where time and spatial relationships are morphed into enchanted contemplation of self and culture. Each of Valenzuela's works is an invitation to become more aware of the infinite internal and external expansiveness of our universe.
