JANA KAMILA MASIK

Modalities of Expression
November 3 – November 24, 2015
Reception: Thursday, November 5, 2015 6-8 PM

Jana Kamila Masik is a wonderfully sensitive painter whose works fall somewhere between abstract and landscape. Jana paints in acrylic with a consistent palette of light earth tones: pale yellows, taupe, grays, shadowy purples, and the occasional deep indigo or an accentuating sprightly green. She creates soft, almost pastel-like textures that allow treetops to blend into the sky and buildings to recede into a foggy night. Her grasp of atmospherics is comprehensive, and her light touch with a paintbrush leaves mystery intact on the canvas.
Jana uses the landscape around her as inspiration for her dreamlike scenes, which cover nature, small town scenes, and individual architectural studies. Her works show country houses; ancient street corners; and rolling vineyards, isolated on the top of beautiful hills. She often focuses on a single grove of trees or one corner of a building, drawing out the poetry that exists in simple lines and unpopulated scenery. She asks the viewer to consider stillness and quiet.
Jana was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and today lives in Languedoc, in the south of France, where she maintains a studio.
