JAMES ROSS CHISHOLM

Modalities of Expression
November 3 – November 24, 2015
Reception: Thursday, November 5, 2015 6-8 PM

For James Chisholm drawing and painting is a way of life. Chisholm’s work shows the hand of someone who paints daily, for pleasure but also with the keen and discerning eye of a true seeker. Continuing the glorious tradition of French and American 19th century landscape painters, the artist spends hours working en plein air. He is interested in how changes in the weather affect light, color and mood of the motifs he chooses. Painting is not only an adventure of the eye, however, but also a material process. Fascinated by how paint responds to cold or heat, Chisholm paints outdoors even in extreme weather conditions. He welcomes the accidents that nature provides and uses his own occasional physical discomfort to his artistic advantage.

Chisholm lives in Salem, Massachusetts. He teaches drawing and painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Art and at North Shore Community College. He taught at the Harvard University Extension at the Boston Museum and at Endicott College. He exhibits regularly. Chisholm’s drawings and paintings are held in many private collections.
