CHRIS SILVER

Modalities of Expression
November 3 – November 24, 2015
Reception: Thursday, November 5, 2015 6-8 PM

Chris Silver’s oil paintings combine several styles, creating a distinctive brand of portraiture that is fused with emotional energy. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder as an adolescent, Silver found art to be a therapeutic force in his life. “There are times where I hit my lows and get lost in self-doubt,” Silver says. “Some paintings might be subdued, aggressive, or melancholic, whilst other ones may be theatrical, intense, and expressive.”

Silver, who says he is drawn to the theatricality of fashion images, often uses magazine clippings and other found materials for inspiration. He paints with highly saturated colors, a choice he refers to alternately as “overindulgence” and “a celebration.” For Silver, the creative process is a way to vent and express himself, so his paintings often function as a form of encoded journal entry fused with artistry. “I am very interested in the emotional quality of color,” Silver says, “so I tend to vent my anxieties into my paintings and try to get across a vague mood and atmosphere.”
