BJÖRN RYFORS

The Influence of Color
November 3 – November 24, 2015
Reception: Thursday, November 5, 2015 6-8 PM

Björn Ryfors’ oil paintings, which the artist terms non-figurative, depict abstract forms and landscapes with rough energy. For Ryfors, the process begins when the “empty canvas steps aside, the colors take place, and a picture is born.” His brush strokes, visible from a distance, instill a sense of presence in each painting, with which the viewing process becomes a dialogue between the artist and viewer. The titles of Ryfors’ paintings are derived from the artist's musings, which he inscribes on the back of each piece. These ruminations can range anywhere from the philosophical to the personal, sometimes preemptively answering questions about the artist's technique or offering profound analyses of the human condition.

It is difficult to apply a label to the abstracted content of Ryfors’ paintings. A still life might be seen by one viewer just as soon as a night sky would appear to another. In this way, the viewer joins Ryfors in his contemplation. A question is asked or answered, and a picture is born.
