MARK JAMES FORD

Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography
November 3 – November 24, 2015
Reception: Thursday, November 5, 2015 6-8 PM

Mark James Ford produces incredible nature photography that almost surpasses belief. Ford shoots the familiar and the far-flung alike, moving from the trees in the backyard to the distant corners of frozen winter landscapes. His work shows ice floes and cresting ocean waves rife with motion. Even innocent flowers take on an air of the exotic when Ford photographs them. Shot in extreme close-up with fuzzy, oversaturated backgrounds, they loom into the frame like shadowy giants.

Across the board, even more unusual than his subject matter is the way that Ford shoots it. He crops out context like shorelines, horizons, and even the ground. He tightly frames a single wave or the heart of a tree. Leaves, ice crystals, and water currents become pure texture. The camera captures one nanosecond in time to preserve nature as few have seen it.

Ford was born near Birmingham, Britain and currently lives near Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He is a reference photographer for Sigma Deutschland and a research chemist at Bayer CropScience AG, a career triggered originally by his interest in the science behind photographic film development.
