IRYNA BROWN

Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography
April 26 – May 17, 2016
Reception: Thursday, April 28, 2016 6-8 PM

Iryna Brown's photography is a lesson in creative precision. Brown works almost exclusively within a studio to create still lifes that exercise high stylization as a means of storytelling influenced by magical realism. The background is often a theatrical curtain of black or white. Objects are placed deliberately to lead the eye through the composition, as if through a narrative. The scenes are lit with a dramatic flair that underscores the artificiality of the tableau while at the same time making it clearer and more real for the viewer.

For subjects, Brown uses classic signifiers of romance and mystery. She photographs pearls winding around roses, leather-bound books arrayed across vintage maps, card houses, and dried flowers. The human presence is a key figure, though only present off-camera, implied solely with objects: a half-finished cup of tea or a candle left burning.

Brown was born in Angarsk in Siberia, Russia and has lived in England since 2009. In addition to being a fine artist, she is a published author.
