ROBERT SCURFIELD

Figuratively Speaking
July 8 – July 28, 2016
Reception: Thursday, July 14, 2016 6-8 PM

Robert Scurfield uses acrylic on canvas to create saturated natural scenes. His loose brush strokes add dimension to dappled light on forest floors and trees blowing in the wind. Each scene captures a moment in time. Leaves turn to warm reds and oranges, or long spindly shadows stretch through the canvas, creating a sense of time passing, crystallized by the paint. Many of Scurfield's locations appear solitary and almost secret. The bright, assertive paint and specificity in time create stolen moments in a landscape that is familiar to the artist. Scurfield takes inspiration from his travels throughout his home in Canada and abroad. With careful attention to detail, Scurfield conveys the vastness of prairies or the lushness of Canada's forests. His works balance between giving the viewer an immediate sense of place and imbuing each landscape with depth. Trees, fences, and rough-hewn stairs recede into cool horizons that glow where they meet the earth.
Robert Scurfield lives and works from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His painting celebrates the magnitude and diversity of Canada’s natural landscapes.
