ROGER DICAMILLO

Emerging Visions
January 21 – February 10, 2017
Reception: Thursday, January 26, 2017 6-8 PM

The cliffside houses of the Italian hillside and coast, as well as the sky and sea that surround them, are the main subject of Roger DiCamillo’s paintings. Working in oils on canvas, DiCamillo makes images that capture his subjects while also standing as intricate studies in shape and color. “The paintings I create,” he says, “usually start with nothing in mind, and evolve from the shapes that take place on the canvas.” In those paintings, a strong sense of line and composition is employed in works that juxtapose the basic forms of the built environment with the spontaneous qualities of the natural world.

Having owned an architectural office, DiCamillo brings the respect for structure that profession demands into his paintings. As a lifelong resident of the American Southwest, he exhibits a sensitivity to the power of landscape, balancing intensely blue skies and dusky earth tones to strong effect. The resulting pictures combine a range of influences, from his Italian heritage to the American Southwest, to create a world that is at once vividly realistic and a product of the artist’s personal vision. DiCamillo lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
