In Jian Jun An’s paintings, lines assume a life of their own, creating currents of motion that make viewing his images an active experience. From rather abstract forms that seem to take shape before our eyes to realistic scenes that are given an otherworldly spin through his distinctive technique, the artist employs a dynamic sense of color, form and composition that results in images with a constantly shifting energy. Even his most dramatic paintings have a sense of stillness at their center, while his more relaxed scenes become unexpectedly complex.
Working in acrylics and oils, the artist balances Eastern and Western styles of painting. Born in China, he trained there before coming to Canada in 2005. By incorporating the open manner of making art in the West, he constructs a hybrid that combines the best of both worlds. With their vibrant color palette and varying textures, his paintings build upon a strong underlying sense of balance and harmony to make a statement that echoes his influences, yet remains unique and highly personal. The artist lives and works in British Columbia.
