SEPPO KARI

Emerging Visions
December 29 – January 14, 2016
Reception: Thursday, January 7, 2016 6-8 PM

The surreal oil, acrylic, and mixed media paintings of Finnish artist Seppo Kari combine a precise attention to line and detail with a more liberal use of color, texture, and geometric form. Kari has been influenced by Italian art and the Renaissance, and one of the elements that makes his work so interesting lies in how he is able to visually bridge this distant era with the present, juxtaposing classical elements with distinctly modernist forms to create something entirely new.

A hallmark of Kari’s work is his unique use of shadow and light, where shadows are employed quite effectively to create lightness, shape, and illusion. Present in many of his paintings is what is called the “black light,” where shadow is used to create a distinctive nighttime world in which all is not what it seems to be. This use of shadow adds an air of mystery and depth to the overall effect, resulting in paintings that are poignant and relevant while at the same time being disconnected from reality.

Seppo Kari currently lives and works in Seinäjoki, Finland.
