ROZSA DAJKA

Emerging Visions
December 29 – January 14, 2016
Reception: Thursday, January 7, 2016 6-8 PM

The vibrant oil paintings of Rozsa Dajka are sensory experiences that go far beyond the visual. Dajka creates works that turn the volume up on color, texture, and composition without ever becoming confrontational or noticeably exaggerated. Her palette is rooted in deep reds, with an emphasis on the natural glows of sunlight and firelight. Paint is layered thickly to create a velvety feeling of lushness, as Dajka zooms in on her portrait and still life subjects, so that they fill the canvas and sometimes spill out of frame.

Dajka describes her pieces as "a source of joy," and indeed they come across as celebrations of what she observes. She paints poppies and hibiscus in full bloom. Her portraits delve into the sitter's emotions, while her full-body works depict women full of strength and movement. Lately she has been painting female nudes in dramatic shades, sometimes with shadows so intense they border on abstraction.

Dajka was born in Hungary in Szabolcs-Szatmar county and has lived in the United States for 17 years. She has won several awards for her work.
