KUNIKO ANAN BARTLETT

Emerging Visions
December 29 – January 14, 2016
Reception: Thursday, January 7, 2016 6-8 PM

Kuniko Anan Bartlett draws from different esoteric artistic traditions, including calligraphy, sumi-e ink wash painting, and silk painting, to create expressions of harmony and tension. Her unique techniques and media allow Bartlett to create layered pieces with profound depth and translucency while retaining the freeform and expressionistic aspects of her style. Given the fluid aspects of the ink wash, Bartlett's work features noticeable and engaging tension between structure and chaos, with aspects of each superimposed on each other. This duality is emphasized in the use of different media, such as thick brushstrokes opposing translucent washes.

Bartlett's work is largely abstract, but is also interspersed with moments of surrealism. At this juncture, her artwork plays to her media, with physical layers producing three-dimensional spaces for her subjects. Bartlett excels, however, at pushing her expressionism in experimental and accessible ways. Her use of paint splatters and painterly brushstrokes gives her work an impassioned and dynamic feel and works with her palette to produce lively and emotionally ambiguous abstract pieces.
