Painter Zhenia Burnat creates vibrant works that blend reality with the surreal. Unusual colors mix and swirl in planes of varying hue to build scenes that are both recognizable and carefully altered. In some pieces, areas of texture are separated and lend an overarching graphic quality to the works. In others, disembodied human features are introduced into landscapes, or sensitive flora and fauna exist against and underneath richly pigmented atmospheres. Burnat’s short, multicolored brushstrokes break up each piece and add dimension to the subjects that grow and sit in dramatic diagonals or strong verticals and horizontals across each canvas. Areas of deep black anchor many of the works, giving them depth. At the same time, Burnat experiments with different styles, introducing geometric patterns, a sense of artistic topography, and portraiture into his work.
Burnat lives and works in Eilat, Israel. In each work, he reflects on the infinity of space and time. The paintings observe and reflect on the world, and Burnat hopes to elicit thought from the viewer with each new composition.
