JULIA MEYEROWITZ-KATZ

Red Dot Miami 2022
November 30 – December 4, 2022
Reception: Wednesday, November 30, 2022 6-8 PM

Julia Meyerowitz-Katz expertly portrays the emotional mind and its many layers with every molding, crevice, crack, and gesture she forges. The South African-born Australian artist also works as a Jungian psychoanalyst and art psychotherapist; roles that exquisitely harmonize when together employed to craft her senseful creations. Meyerowitz-Katz' method is hands-on and aims in achieving non-verbal communication and stimulating encounters. With clay, it's a conversation: as the artist shapes, the clay obliges and permanently memorizes their rendezvous. On two-dimensional surfaces, she gathers cold wax in hand, placing it where her instincts desire. Dashes and mixtures of oil sticks, paints, graphite dust and more are added until energy has been thoroughly expressed to and from the canvas. Every work is a telling of impulse, emotion, and personal or collective experience, which Meyerowitz-Katz especially connects to because of her mental health experience. “I am working at depth with people, who like me, have their own stories and are being affected by massive global uncertainties and challenges,” she says. “All my work in one way or another, is an expression of my embodied unconscious responses to the vagaries of the uncertainty, trauma and loss which we all share.”

Meyerowitz-Katz lives, creates, and practices in Sydney, Australia. She is a certified Jungian analyst, has a Master's and Postgraduate Diploma in Art Therapy and a BA in Fine Arts with Honors. If elements of her work were to be compared to any of the greats, resonant comparisons would be the color of Chagall and the spirit of de Kooning.
