YoungHee Woo

Korean artist YoungHee Woo confronts the ultimate destination in a new series of oil paintings. Wrestling with themes of existence, atrophy and mortality, Woo uses a limited color palate to explore the possibility of a life after death. In A Recluse and Champion, the artist reimagines life as a chess board, leaving her ghostly figures to wander blindly through this new plane of existence. What could be a grim portrait of death becomes a playful meditation on the mysteries of the unknown. Woo adds a lightness to the work, rendering her figures with a sense of confidence and bewilderment. Each piece builds a complex narrative with eerie settings that feel fresh out of a Tim Burton film, a stage where each character must come face-to-face with the sum of their existence and the beginning of what could be a new chapter.

The artist reminds us of the sacredness of life and the existential questions we all face as we get closer to the end than the beginning. YoungHee Woo currently lives and works in Kyungsangnamdo, South Korea.
