Contemporary artist Joanna Stuart creates unique photographs and photographic collages that express realism and playfulness. She creates her work by combining fragments of photographs to make an entirely new image. She often incorporates ordinary objects into real and imagined spaces, or offers a new perspective in her non-representational imagery. Through her work, Joanna aims to surprise the viewer with the unexpected. Each work reveals new details and elements the more it is studied, offering boundless potential for discovery. As the real and imagined come together, her images spark curiosity, thought, and pleasure.
Joanna is deeply influenced by her work in anthropology and has a special interest in Latin America where she has lived, including teenage summers in Mexico. These experiences seeded her enthusiasm for vibrant colors, handmade crafts, and woven fabrics. Learning purely through her own experimentation, her development as an artist has been both a spontaneous and a disciplined process. In all of her artistic endeavors, her greatest inspiration comes from observing and enjoying the unusual in the everyday. Joanna has participated in several group and solo exhibitions since 2015. Her work has been selected for two national Juried exhibits in NYC, one international Juried exhibit in California, and she was honored with the Juror’s Choice Photograph in a Juried group exhibit in Vermont.
