Javier Rivas

Based on the vitality of his native Madrid, Javier Rivas creates transcendent pieces that contain themes of beauty, fertility and the sheer force of life. His organic style evokes the Spanish culture and the Atlantic Ocean of Galicia that he knows very well. Pieces bursting with symbolism and explosive color are Rivas’ trademark in his daring works that delve into the nature of reality. His subject matter often includes the infinite possibilities of female form, landscapes and strange animals that he rearranges into bold new forms.

Rivas specializes in digital art based on his drawings, as well as small sculptures made from exotic woods covered with steel balls. He intensely works on a piece for months until he creates a mysterious and suggestive structure full of life. Distancing from a work and later returning to it gives him a fiercely clean perspective and a renewed connection to his art. In rearranging elements of his digital work and sculpture, Rivas exerts complete control over the details of his work by carefully working as a surgeon and generates intrincate pieces that are the result of a rewarding creative experience full of pleasure and enthusiasm."

I create each of my works digitally and base them on preliminary drawings. I work intensely on each piece for months until I get a mysterious, suggestive structure, that is full of life. I am interested in the female form, landscapes, obscure animals, and classical drawings. My sculptural work is smaller scale and created by using exotic wood in combination with steel. I approach each of my pieces as a composition that must be gutted, dived into, carefully observed to generate something new forms.
