November 3 – November 24, 2015
Reception: Thursday, November 5, 2015 6-8 PM

The paintings of Shireen van Nieuwenhuyse are richly textured and quietly expressive, reminiscent of the works of Mark Rothko. Conversant in numerous techniques and mediums, van Nieuwenhuyse evolved from creating ceramics and sculptures to paintings over the course of several years, drawn to the medium by her love of color. Yet her instinct for three-dimensional pieces still remains as an influence on her current series of works. This is evident in van Nieuwenhuyse's experimentation with materials such as sand and pastel, which she incorporates into her acrylic paintings.

Van Nieuwenhuyse considers herself an abstract expressionist, conveying her feelings and moods through the use of pigment, shadow, and light. She draws inspiration from elements of the world around her, such as the color, form, texture, and pattern of the sky, sea, and natural terrain. In particular, van Nieuwenhuyse is often fascinated with aerial landscapes. Currently a resident of the US, she was born in Iran and grew up in England. Her many travels have enriched her life and her artwork.
