JUAN URBÈT

The Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition
August 25 – September 8, 2015
Reception: Thursday, August 27, 2015 6-8 PM

The intimate, labyrinthine works of Juan Urbèt are journeys into the interior world of the artist. With a masterful understanding of compositional relationships, Urbèt balances out negative space with calligraphic squibbles, writing, and symbols. Urbèt describes his work as a relationship of opposites: intimacy and isolation, light and dark, present and future, revelation and secrecy. Many of his pieces resemble maps leading to unknown places or describing foreign lands, giving the viewer glimpses into a reality or urban landscape they have never confronted before. While inspired by the world around him, Urbèt does not seek to represent it or any moment in time, but rather a broad scope of experience and feelings. He favors small-format pieces, increasing the sense of intimacy with the work, and utilizes materials like wood, linen, and paper to give each painting texture.

Urbèt currently divides his time between Spain and Paris. His work has been shown in Malaga, Barcelona, Paris, London and New York, as part of both solo and group exhibitions. Recently, he was acknowledged by the Fédération Nationale de la Culture Française in Paris in 2014 and by the 30th Chelsea International Fine Art Competition at Agora Gallery in New York in 2015.
