Spanish artist Rosana Largo Rodríguez takes on a litany of themes and time periods in this series of oil paintings. Using an angelic bell-shaped canvas, the artist delicately-constructs images of women, children and animals, incorporating elements of fantasy, popular culture, and surrealism. From the modern young woman and her swan in Dancer to a child sprouting from the earth with branches coming out of her head in Metamorphosis, the artist lovingly renders every detail, further drawing the viewer into this new reality. At once delicate and provocative, the artist coaxes the viewer with her attention to detail while playing with larger themes of feminism, the loss of innocence, mortality, and parenthood. What feels precious becomes a glaring social technique, asking the viewer to rethink their relationship to the subjects on display.

The artist feels more than comfortable improvising with a blank canvas, rarely sketching out her work beforehand. She uses anilines and natural pigments that give the work chromatic softness. To slow down the drying process, Rodríguez uses olive oil instead of turpentine, giving the colors a more oleic texture.
