Unbound Perspectives

Unbound Perspectives, a group exhibition that spans new painting, photography, drawing, and even wood, opens this June at Agora Gallery. The show puts Japanese experiments with abstract textures in ink next to Mexican hyperrealistic oil portraits of real-life figures. There are fantastical manipulations of the female body in wood from Armenia and Indian contemplations of the infinite in acrylic. Side by side, the pieces challenge us to figure out what they have in common as much as they ask us how they are different. When artwork of this kind of range is presented altogether, an image of the state of contemporary art begins to emerge. Unbound Perspectives is essential viewing for anyone looking for a true survey of contemporary art that is far-reaching yet discerning.

The Elixir of Color

The large-scale abstract paintings of American artist Sherry Rinderer are as vibrant in color and form as they are profound in meaning. Varied in style—from sleek and contemporary to textured and antique—and blending bright hues with earthy tones, her paintings are recognizable for their unique sense of balance and harmonious approach to composition to create a style that is purely her own. But what is most striking is how Rinderer’s paintings again and again seamlessly capture the endless sense of magic and possibility that exists in our world. The inspiration for the work comes from beyond the studio, and getting out and simply being in the world as much as possible is an intrinsic part of her process. Thus inspired, Rinderer immerses herself in the creative realm, moving beyond representational and experimenting with original ways to juxtapose colors and texture with strong composition and design elements to create highly expressionistic images. Viewers are inevitably struck by the emotional response elicited by her work and ever-present universal themes of beauty, grace, and continuous love.
