VINCENT DONATO

Red Dot Miami 2021
December 1 – December 5, 2021
Reception: Wednesday, December 1, 2021 6-8 PM

Orginally from Staten Island, self-taught artist Vincent Donato is dedicated to constantly learning and evolving his style. His pieces are conceptual, abstract, visceral and sculptural. While his style is original, he finds himself drawn to the works and aesthetic of artists like Francis Bacon and Alberto Giacometti.

Vincent tries to work off of straight emotion and how he feels in the moment when he begins to paint. He employs a variety of materials in his work including inks, pigments, graphite, and plaster. He also uses oil paints and wire for sculptural pieces.

Some of his work has an interest in mental health and self-harm. He is influenced by his own demons through finding a certain beauty in them.

Roses are a keystone image in his work. In his words, “they are souls that live and die. I use them to represent life, love, death, and tragedy.”

Roses are strong, yet fragile. He paints them vertically to depict life, and horizontally to depict death. Beyond death, the horizontal roses represent the act of self-harm, mimicking the line of horizontal scars as a form of his own self-reflection.
