Mileidy Plata’s large-scale, equestrian paintings are as vibrant in color as they are profound in meaning. A native of Motembo, Cuba, the artist at an early age developed a passion for horses, a motif that is perpetually reflected through her work. Utilizing oil on canvas as her primary medium, the artist imbues each of her subjects with a nearly anthropomorphic sense of expression upon her highly saturated canvases. The artist explains: “I consider horses my soul mate, so I portray it in my work - the horse as an expression of my emotions, the reflection of my personal experiences, my worries, joys, fears and what my attitude is towards each one of them.”
In works such as Exitation (2017), the noble equestrian serves as the focal point of the composition, pushed to the foreground of the canvas. The horse, rendered in weighty shades of royal and navy blue, stares longingly towards the right side of the composition, its head thrown back in contemplative bewilderment. A nearly abstract landscape comprises the background of the canvas, rolling hills executed in vibrant shades of ruby, emerald, orange, and blue. Towards the top register of the composition, we observe swaying palm trees and the faint outline of a lightning bolt. Bordering on the surreal, Plata’s works demonstrate the sublime majesty of the dignified animal.
