Maribel Matthews is a Gibraltarian artist whose work spans an array of styles. Working mainly in oil, her mastery of the medium allows her to seamlessly transition from a thickly impastoed abstraction to a delicate impressionist scene.
Confronted by mounting concern over the imminent climate crisis and its disastrous effects, Matthews has endeavored to shift the message of her work to actively raise awareness of the danger our planet faces. As such, she has begun to create more abstracted work that incorporates a bold and powerful color palette, depicting the increase in natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and fires. Along with this, Matthews has begun to shift her medium from solely oil to include more mixed media elements in order to do her part in protecting the planet we all share.
