Israeli artist Ifat Shatzky blurs the boundaries of abstraction and landscape painting in her oil on wood panel works. Constructing narratives about the confluence of time and space, the artist paints in an effort to question notions of chaos and control, intention and intuition, randomness and order. Her hazy, mysterious compositions are created through wiping, exposing, scratching, and smearing — her process is one of simultaneous creation and destruction. Building the surface of the canvas layer-by-layer, Shatzky’s pictures each retain traces of their unique histories and remnants of their dynamic creation.

In her painting titled Hazy, Shatzky renders an atmospheric landscape in shades dark brown. Faint hints of a river, trees, and a mountain range emerge from the smoky layers of paint like ghostly ruins. In Big Blue the artist suggests the image of a stormy sea. Without a clear horizon, the canvas floats between subtle abstraction and watery landscape. Finally, Red veers into complete abstraction; layers of brick red paint are applied in varying opacities to create a scene that is at once peaceful and ominous.
