Venugopal V.G.

Venugopal V.G. is an indian artist, born in Valakkunja, a remote village in Kasaragod district of North Kerala. He obtained his BFA in Painting from the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, University of Mysore and his MFA in Printmaking from the Chitrakala Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore University. He has received several notable awards for his work in his career as an artist, including the 2000-2001 National scholarship from the Department of Culture in India, H.K.Kejriwal Young Artist Award and Camel Art Foundation Award. Among the many exhibitions in which he has participated are the Bharat Bhavan International Biennale of Print Art in Bhopal, India; ‘Magmart VII’ Video Art Festival, Naples, Italy; 7th Guanlan International Print Biennial, Shenzin, China

In his work, he attempts to show a critical engagement with the changing facets of human relations and sensibilities. Issues such as urban migration, encroachment and displacement are reflected in the Bangalore-based artist’s paintings. He successfully mingles intangible aspects into more apparent subject matter, lending to layered, metaphorical imagery. He uses a variety of mediums including watercolors, acrylics, printing, woodcuts and etching, and plays with the scale to reflect the broader intention of the piece. Each piece highlights his vast range of technical skills as an artist, and often features a nod to Indian culture and surrealism.
