Artist Valerie Rey works with wood and glass to create her Specimen series. In Geisha, what looks like a crustacean coated in colorful pearls glimmers with radiant light. Inside, we see the notches of wood curve outward like the ridges of some forgotten cave.
Rey combines her materials with ease, hiding the seams of her polished sculpture. The work feels as if it was harvested fully-formed from some alien planet. Ornate and delicate, Rey’s specimens represent their own mysterious reality, at once connected to and removed from the world around us.
