Sometimes figurative and sometimes abstract, Tony Stockman’s acrylic, oil, and mixed media work is textured and palpably constructed. In some pieces, bright colors scatter across the canvas in thick strokes, suggesting movement and elemental forces with dramatic gestures. In others, landscapes emerge in varying degrees from rough, thick material, heavy in sprawling natural scenes or gritty in cityscapes. In each work, texture and form intermingle to capture the essence of the subject. Stockman paints with attention to the awe-inspiring moments he observes in his everyday life. In many works, he drags paint through the entire composition, creating rough lines, speckles, and drips of paint that add variety and atmosphere to each scene as they create momentum from one edge of the canvas to the other. His works ultimately range from almost abstract interpretations of water and ice to detailed portraits and landscapes dotted with fully realized creatures.
Currently living and working in Northampton, UK, Tony Stockman is a self-taught artist. He prides himself on his keen focus to detail, color, and light in painting.
