SYLVIE MICHAULT

A Moment in Time
May 20 – June 9, 2016
Reception: Thursday, May 26, 2016 6-8 PM

Mixed-media artist Sylvie Michault manages a delicate ambiance in her works, balancing the joys and pitfalls of a life of contemporary adventure. Her art is largely composed of plant material, including painstakingly collected and curated leaves from across the world. These materials reflect on Sylvie Michault's time spent in each place as well the fragile relationship humanity has with the world it lives in. Each piece combines rigid geometry with the aesthetics of decay, a reminder of the frailness of the materials that Sylvie Michault uses and the fleeting beauty of a world rapidly falling out of balance.Though they are diptychs, triptychs, or polyptychs, each element is a picture on it own.

The delicacy of Sylvie Michault's work is often tempered with an unusual sense of intensity. Her spare use of color adds dramatic effect, heightening the sense of contrast and depth. The sense of the peculiarity of Sylvie Michault's natural elements, however, is always in the foreground. Their foreignness, unusual sizes, and patterns are, in a sense, put under a microscope, allowing each work to exist as a microcosm of memory and fleeting optimism. The artist says, that, though her works are made of plant matter and organic clues, "my pictures are not ephemeral artwork." Many of her pieces, created 15 years ago, are still in tact today.

Sylvie Michault was born near Paris in Saint Maur. She currently lives and works in the French Guiana where she has been for the past 25 years.
