American artist Steven Cary creates compelling images that combine bold graphic imagery with strong elements of realism. Inspired both by the great masters of Classical Realism as well as the innovators of the Modern and Post-Modern periods, Cary merges great painterly skill with an ever-evolving experimentation with materials, composition, and technique. What results are powerful artworks that transport the viewer to a place which is quite out of the ordinary, be it on an emotional, aesthetic, spiritual, intellectual or other plane. Cary’s process places a strong emphasis on composition, with unexpected juxtapositions, unusual combination of elements, and surprising crops that offer the viewer a fresh way to see the world. In creating his paintings, he first develops a textured surface overlaid with sympathetic imagery, so that accidental elements of the textures intersect in interesting ways with the image as it unfolds. As Cary explains, “It’s a dynamic dance, a place where the right and the left side of the brain collaborate rather than compete. I know of no better way to live in the present moment.”
Steven Cary currently lives and works in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
