For Steven Anggrek, photography is more than a way of recording the world. Born in the remote Moluccas islands of Indonesia, Anggrek has a strong appreciation for the beauty of nature, but his images cover a wide range of subjects. Often sketching out the ideas for his photos before picking up the camera, he sees his work as a “handcraft” as much of a product of lenses and computers. Using 35mm and medium-format analog cameras, Anggrek develops his images, scans them and then employs the tools of digital photography to create images that distill the essence of each scene.
Whether he is isolating flowers against a stark white background, or altering the appearance of a landscape through multiple exposures, the photographer is able to bring the textures and colors of each image forward, resulting in pictures that combine a strong physical presence with a quiet, dreamlike tone. His sharp eye for color and ability to expressively juxtapose light and shadow add to that dynamic sense of contrast, and powerfully draw in the viewer.
