PICASSO PICASSO

Painter Juan Antonio Picasso creates bold works that display influences of cubism, surrealism, and abstraction. Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Picasso explores and incorporates themes of Afro-Cuban history and culture into his canvases. He subverts stereotypes by diverging from visual conventions and looking at imagery with a critical gaze. His bright palette and dynamic application go beyond decorative purposes to present social metaphors and cultural iconography. His paintings integrate references to music, nature, urban life, and the human psyche. The resulting energetic compositions are dream-like, but what Picasso declares as his vision of life.

He is particularly interested in the relationship between artist and spectator. He believes art reflects the sentiments of its creator and acts as a form of aesthetic dialogue and platform for modern discourse. Sometimes his works aim for empathy and other times controversy. But he believes art should always be “committed, critical, evaluative, communicative, and in search of solutions.”
