Working in collaboration, Colombian-born Diego Perez Espitia and Austrian-born Irmgard Reiter, make pieces that interrogate the common ground between visual and built space through computation. By exploring the associative arrangements between thousands of lines, Perez-Reiter’s work has a strong sense of spatiality and musical ambience. Both practicing architects, the work initially emerged as conceptual studies form their designs. Using the rigors of technology to express nature’s beautiful, creational, evolving process, the team utilizes high-end computational tools in tandem with traditional drawing techniques.
For Perez-Reiter, having lived for several years in an earthquake-sensitive zone in Colombia, the awareness of hidden, constant movement became a fascination. From the movements of the earth below, to the coding of notation systems, the work evokes diverse sensations, from calm subtlety to extreme lavishness, rewriting natural events and cultural constructs into algorithmic procedures. “We take the act of drawing to an unconventional realm,” said the artists. The duo has exhibited internationally in “Artrooms London, Ying Gallery, Beijing, and Feria del Millón 2017, Bogotá, Colombia, among other venues.
