MIMI MOYLAN

Plurality of Expression
January 21 – February 10, 2017
Reception: Thursday, January 26, 2017 6-8 PM

Mimi Moylan uses acrylic paint and woodburning techniques to build sharp, graphic images ranging from mandalas to landscapes. Often using a range of blues, from serene to vibrant, overlaid with solid black, Moylan’s high contrast images play with space and focus. The colorful textured areas serve as the backdrops for fine darker patterns. This trend continues with wood burned designs, which similarly balance dark, flat graphic imagery with rough, organic texture. This balance of intricate detail and a natural quality runs through all of Moylan’s work. Each painting has large, broad brush and palette knife strokes, creating a multi-toned sea or sky on which the designs sit. Moylan faithfully represents elephants and natural scenes, but adds motiefs to each design to create images balanced between realism and geometric design. Each image ranges from shining white to deep cerulean blue and even to deep velvety black.

Moylan lives and works in British Columbia, where she also practices as a yoga instructor. Meditation informs the galaxy element in her paintings. Similarly, sacred geometry feeds into the patterns Moylan puts into her work.
