Through his highly stylized art, Canadian painter Mike Smalley explores the complexities of abstraction and the highly emotive images that evolve from this process. Within each painting, a strong emphasis on line gradually yields an integration of seemingly disconnected fragments and forms, resulting in a strong expressionistic vista that extends beyond pure abstraction into something more recognizable.
Smalley’s deep love for typography and calligraphy permeates into his work through his emphasis on the living line and his dedication to following its extraordinary journey toward the emergence of form. It is the line that guides the evolution of the work, transforming the empty space of the canvas into something living and breathing with human emotion. As Smalley explains, “There is a moment in every painting in which a line is so important, it must be retrieved, protected, and revered. The line is the architecture, the movement, the finale to every work.”
Smalley studied Fine Arts at York University. He is a retired Art and Creative Director for Advertising.
