For Belgian artist Max Werner, the creation of each etching and acrylic on canvas painting is a different adventure. One of the hallmarks of Werner’s work lies in the way he is able to capture the diversity of light as it occurs in various contexts. In fact, Werner’s rendering of the light gives his images a mystical quality that borders on surrealism as it transforms ordinary landscapes and figures into terrains deep with symbolism and meaning. Indeed, Werner’s intention in creating his compelling images is not so much to faithfully represent those places he has been but rather to evoke the feeling of that place and the inherent emotions contained within.
Werner's serene images inevitably evolve of their own accord throughout the artistic process. However, although they remain dynamic and expansive, the common thread that runs throughout all of Werner’s works is that they serve to tell a story and, in turn, unearth new meanings for the viewer in any subject. This invites the viewer to reflect and perhaps look a little bit deeper into the complex and dazzling world that surrounds them.
