Canadian artist Marian Gaucher is a master of oils and pastels, creating abstract paintings replete with vivid, rich colors and filled with elements of interest, beauty, and emotion. Each image starts with a subject, whether landscape, cityscape, still life, or human figure. In the process of capturing each on canvas or paper, Gaucher abstracts her subjects and thus enters a new level of expressionism that offers a certain mystery to the image while revealing its subjects in unexpected ways. Gaucher works to keep the subject identifiable while also expanding and enhancing the finished images, “making them a puzzle for the eyes.”
The influence of Cubism is evident in her paintings, which are defined by geometric, enigmatic forms and bold strokes. The resulting design, the nuances attained by the variety of shapes used, and the dynamic rhythm that underscores each piece all make for a unique artistic style meant to enchant and intrigue the viewer. Gaucher’s greatest hope is that these visual worlds of wonder inspire the viewer and invite him or her to see the world in a whole new way.
Gaucher currently resides in Ontario, Canada.
