Dutch artist Lida Boonstra is an impressionistic sculptor dedicated to the use of steel as a sculpting medium. Her works tackle a wide range of subject matter, but are characterized by the minimalism demanded by her medium and the array of emotional content they display. In a take on the traditional bust form, Boonstra has presented her wildlife “trophies” as a means of humanizing animals and exploring the universality of emotion. Through the juxtaposition of characterization and the natural beauty of her subjects, the viewer is treated to a special depth of soul.

Using only sheets of steel, Boonstra instills a depth and fluidity which defies the rigid, homogeneous nature of her medium. By tempering the metal with applied heat, she produces colors and lusters that remind the viewer that man-made sculptures can resonate just as soundly as organic constructs. Boonstra additionally leaves the marks of her artistic processes as key details, the same way that a painter might work with painterly brushstrokes. This attention to even the smallest details produces a defined aesthetic that is both familiar and modern.
