Reception: Thursday, June 6, 2019 6-8 PM

Japanese artist Kazuhiro Ueda walks the streets of Edinburgh looking for inspiration for his black-and-white photographs, giving us an intimate perspective of the city. He uses a large 50 mm lens to create a shallow depth of field. Out-of-focus objects purposefully obscure our view of his subjects, giving context to every shot. The viewer gets a sense of the room where Ueda once stood and the distance between him and his subjects. In 12_Through the Bottle, a bottle distorts our view of a bustling city street, as if the viewer and the artist were gazing out the window. In 10_Gleam, we see a young woman sitting alone in a restaurant through a glass door, rooting the viewer in the artist’s shoes as she lingers on the other side of the door.

Kazuhiro Ueda finds inspiration in people, places and objects alike. From lonely alleyways to cloudy skies, Ueda sees beauty in the sorrow of the city. Often listening to music, the artist wanders the streets waiting for this emotion to break through.
